A little notice before the rain

A useful rain alert gives you time to make a small adjustment: bring things inside, change a departure time, or reach shelter before a shower.

Useful moments for a short heads-up

Walking the dog, crossing a campus, collecting children from practice, or taking a camera outside all involve short windows. A daily rain icon cannot tell you much about those few minutes. A timely notification could direct your attention to the current near-term outlook.

The goal is useful context rather than a stream of every minor forecast change. An alert should help you decide what to check next, not insist that it knows the exact conditions at your feet.

What Weather Slate is developing

Hyper-local precipitation and rain-timing alerts are planned. Details such as the supported area, timing, settings, and delivery behavior are still being developed. They are not advertised as a feature you can rely on today, and no release date is promised.

These planned notices are distinct from official severe-weather information. A short shower can be inconvenient without being severe; a dangerous storm requires attention even if a simple rain estimate appears modest.

An alert depends on more than the forecast

A useful notification needs the right location, timely source information, a working service connection, and device permission. Focus settings and network interruptions can affect when a phone presents a message. Changing the location you care about can also change what a relevant notification would mean.

For a time-sensitive outing, open the forecast instead of waiting for a ping. Check the next hour, inspect radar movement, and allow some flexibility. Silence from an app is not an all-clear.

How to act on rain information

First check which location and time the information describes. Then consider the length of your activity and whether you can change it easily. Moving a five-minute errand is different from coordinating a group already outdoors.

Use 60-minute precipitation for near-term context and official alerts for safety information. Weather Slate’s principle is that safety-related weather information should remain free, regardless of optional Plus features.
